Sprouting Seeds
Sprouting seeds are newly germinated roots/shoots that are harvested to eat when they have just begun to grow so are incredibly quick & easy (about 3-7 days). The benefits of sprouting seeds seem endless as they are packed full of nutrients & much has recently been made of their health benefits – some like Alfalfa are not only rich in vitamins but are reputed to help aid weight loss & Broccoli is thought to help fight against cancer. They add crunch, flavour & colour to salad dishes/soups etc and are easy & cheap to grow - you don’t need a garden just grow indoors in a jam jar covered with muslin or use special sprouting trays.

The seeds will need soaking in water before sowing (the length of time is written on each individual seed) and they will need rinsing in cold water twice a day. This helps to keep the seed clean and prevent fungi growing – don’t allow the seed to sit in water as this encourages rot. Do not overfill jars/trays as some need light to green up and those in the middle may not get any as the seed can expand up to 30 times the original size.

Once seed has grown to its full sprouting seed size they can be kept in a fridge for up to 7 days after – just rinse with water every 3 days.

We have chosen only Organically Sourced Seed for our Sprouting Seeds, we feel this is important as some of the seeds can be eaten aswell.

Sprouting Seeds are packed full of vitamins & nutrients. They taste great and can be harvested nearly all year round.

Alfalfa, Arabic for ‘father of all foods’ which is very appropriate as it is packed full of lots of different vitamins & nutrients and it is thought to aid weight loss too! It has a mild taste and will be ready to harvest in 3-4 days. Soak for 12 hours before putting in jar/tray.
Fenugreek has quite a strong ‘curryish’ taste and it is better to use a little at a time. It takes about 9 days to harvest. Longer shoots (5cm) have a milder flavour/shorter shoots are more intense (1.5cm). Soak for 8-12 hours before putting in jars/tray.
Broccoli - These sprouts are high in anti-oxidants and studies link them to the successful treatment of cancer. They have a mild broccoli taste and are ready to harvest in 3-4 days. Soak for 8-12 hours first.

Mung Bean are the ‘bean sprouts’ that are used in Chinese cooking (minus the bean hull that is not that easy to remove) but they also taste great raw. Mung beans are ready in 3-5 days when about 5cm long and have a gorgeous nutty ‘young pea’ taste. They are high in proteins, vitamin C & potassium. Pre-soak in water for 8-12 hours first.
Radish Rambo – shoots are a lovely rich red colour that will liven up any plate. They are rich in vitamins and are suitable for sprouts or microgreens. Radish shoots have a slightly spicy flavour and will be ready to eat in 2-3 days for shoots and slightly longer for microgreens. In the first few days radish seeds can develop white hairs and these can lead to mould forming. The hairs are an indication that the seeds are not being rinsed often enough, rinse vigorously under running water to remove. Pre-soak in water for 8-12 hours first.
Red Cabbage – bright red sprout colour with a light cabbage taste. They are ready to harvest in 6 days and add a bit of extravagance to a salad and elegance to a piece of fish etc. Pre-soak in water for 8-12hours first.
