Winter Savory is similar to Summer Savory but with a more pungent peppery taste, sort of like thyme. It has pinnate small leaves and small white flowers with a pinky/purple tinge.
Winter Savory is a hardy semi-evergreen perennial that reaches 30cm tall by 20cm wide. The stems do become woody with age so it is good to regulary pick the stems to ensure fresh new growth.
Like Summer Savory it is said to calm the stomach and aid digestion and also is thought to bring relief when rubbed on bee/wasps stings.
If grown inside it can be harvested all year and makes a good container plant.

Full sun, well-drained, poor soil that has not been fed the previous autumn.

How:

Sow undercover in a propagator (February-May) at 18°C. Water carefully. Germination usually takes 14-21 days. Be careful not to overwater seedlings as they are prone to 'damping off'. When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 9cm pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to transplant outside. Space plants 20cm apart.

Keep picking top growth to ensure new fresh growth. In the second year, a good cut at the end of June will prevent the stem becoming woody.
