Lemongrass Herb Seeds (Cymbopogon flexuous) |

This variety of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuous) is the East Indian strain that has a lovely lemon scent. Its leaves makes a refreshing herbal tea and it it great to use in ‘Thai curries’ & stir fries. It also adds a lemon scent to pot pourris.
|
It is a tender perennial so will need to be brought inside during cold spells and especially winter. It makes a good container plant and grows to a height of 30-40cm. It can be treated as an annual as it is very easy to grow if lack overwintering space.
The leaves are harvested as needed and they will then sprout new ones.

Sunny spot but sheltered. Best in containers that can be moved inside when night-time temperatures drop below 8°C if wish to keep as a perennial.

How:
|
Sow seeds on the surface of compost, tamp down to ensure good seed-compost contact. Water carefully (best from the bottom in a water tray) & keep undercover at a temperature of 20°C. Germination is slow and takes 15-25 days. Pot on into soil based substrate when large enough to handle and then again either outside or into its final container when warmer. Space plants 30cm apart.

Care:

Will need added protection if temperatures fall below 8°C, move inside if in a container and reduce watering levels. The following spring cut back all dead growth & stalks to 5cm & move into warm/light place.

May-Oct when leaves are green. The most intense flavour is at the base of the leaf. |
